I am 100% new to this... sorry for seeming dumb...

I understand possible reasons why some info is not clear or easy to find... But now that I have kodi installed, I have no clue what I need to do next to just watch what I got this to watch. The how to install for iMac was great. No probs. But then nothing says what I need... 3rd party repos (btw the first post collection for that forum is full of 404 pages, one after another)... pvr... I have no idea what a per is!

I am not an idiot, I just walked away from mainstream tv several years ago so I never bothered having a tivo or any of that. I don't even OWN a tv. I have been watching free stuff online - free documentary sites and lots of youtube. I just want kodi so i can watch a few things I miss or couldn't see in theatres etc.

I understand why some content sites or whatever might not be clearly labeled. But I need to know how to figure out what I need to go get. To watch a show that still airs, but I want to see about 2 years of back episodes, what do I need to add? a 3rd party repo? If so... how do i figure out what one will do what I need? How do i avoid having to go through dozens of 404 errors to find one?

So I just need to know the basic info so I can figure out the rest myself. The how to section assumes we all know this, and well, we all don't. I just wanto to watch a couple of things now and then using the iMac.

Helpful responses much appreciated..

Hi

I have a friend who does now have access to fixed internet, and mobile data is too low to use. They are also quite computer illiterate and do not have a computer.

She has a daughter and I would like to be able to send her some sort of device such as a media box (Western Digital etc) with a self contained HDD, and also Kodi preloaded so the onscreen display on her TV will show all the media information I have downloaded onto the HDD.

In other words, is there a simple way to replicate the full Kodi experience I have using Kodi on my PC, from a box that plugs into her TV via HDMI?

I have helped another friend before, he has an external USB 3 HDD and a media box, this works for him as he is reasonalbly literate, but all he sees is a list of file names without any of the nice Kodi features and information.

Possible RC 4 Bug

HI All

i am pretty sure it's been since i put RC 4 on my box, been using the nightlies for a while now and for my usage it was rock solid but have now been getting display anomalies, my TV will re-sync during play back of a show at a random time, this is around 21.19 in the log, then once the show finished i was going to go into the library and it just reset itself again minimized and went to window mode not fake full screen bottom of the log

Unable to build Kodi from source

Hi there,

I've been trying to build Kodi 17 (Krypton) on RPi 3 (Raspbian) natively for a few weeks now. I wasted a lot of time trying to go the autotools route and debugging the numerous issues that kept creeping up. Then I noticed that the autotools is supposed to be deprecated so I cleaned the repo and switched to the CMake project, but it also failed to build. Here are the steps I took:
  1. cmake failed because libcec could not be found (4.0 required, Raspbian only has libcec3 package)
  2. building only libcec from tools/depends does not work because it insists on looking for cmake in the build prefix (/opt/xbmc-deps in my case)
  3. I make links to /usr/bin/cmake in the /opt/xbmc-deps hierarchy but libcec still fails because it can't find some cmake-related files like p8-platform.cmake and Toolchain.something
  4. I decide screw it, will build all deps, including CMake etc, so:

  5. Everything got built except ffmpeg apparently:

  6. I was hoping maybe the cmake project would work at this point and magically build ffmpeg by itself, but no dice:

  7. it failed with libcec again, for some reason pkgconfig was finding the one that came with Raspbian, so I edited project/cmake/modules/FindCEC.cmake and added NO_DEFAULT_PATH:

  8. libcec is okay now but ffmpeg still fails:

  9. checked the contents of build/ffmpeg/src/ffmpeg-build/ffmpeg-prefix/src/ffmpeg-build/config.log, it appears the configure script fails when trying to build a simple program using gnutls because there are a lot of undefined references to symbols related to nettle_... and __gmp... when linking, so I decided to edit arm-linux-gnueabihf/lib/pkgconfig/gnutls.pc:

  10. that fixed some of the undefined references, but still some remain:

    /home/ninja/src/kodi-krypton/tools/depends/target/gnutls/arm-linux-gnueabihf/lib/nettle/mpi.c:43: undefined reference to `nettle_mpz_sizeinbase_256_u'
    /home/ninja/src/kodi-krypton/tools/depends/target/gnutls/arm-linux-gnueabihf/lib/nettle/mpi.c:45: undefined reference to `nettle_mpz_sizeinbase_256_s'
  11. that is as far as I got, can't keep wasting weekends over this...

Please help?

Turkish external subtitle encoding problem in Windows Store App

Hello,

Firstly, let me tell you my setup;

I'm using Kodi with Emby on 4 different machines at home. 3 of them using version Windows store app 17rc and other one Kodi 16.

Emby downloads Tv Shows subtitles automaticly in Turkish. And i'm using this setup over 1 year with no problem. Everything started with upgrading Kodi 17 Win App Store version on 3 machines.

In Kodi 17, subtitles turkish characters are corrupted. But when i'm on Kodi 16 subtitles works fine. I tried every combination in Settings/Player/Language/Subtitle Encoding, but nothing changed.

Also interesting, when i download turkish subtitle from Kodi (with opensubtitle addon), it works fine too (Kodi 17)

I double checked my System Encoding settings, also installed Kodi 16 on three machines and subtitles worked fine. I'm sure its something about Kodi 17 Windows Store App.

Context menu not displayed for some remote control keys

I have installed TV Headend and the frontend on Kodi (v17 RC3 via Libreelec on a RaspberryPi).
To control Kodi I am using the remote control that came with my TV (using CEC support from Kodi).

As I do not have a Menu/Options button that is unused by the main TV functions and could be used to open the context menu, I have used the keymap editor add on to assign one of the colored keys to open the context menu.

This is working for all parts of Kodi fine, but in the TV part I can only use it to open the context menu in the "Guide" section, but it does not work in the "Recordings" or the "Timer" section. This means I cannot delete a recorded tv program via the remote for example
I have already figured out that the context menu can be opened properly if I assign the rewind button (key code 226) to the context menu as a test, however this is not a permanent solution as this removes the original purpose of the rewind button in other parts of Kodi.
The color buttons are my only possibility to assign one of them to execute the context menu, but neither for the red button (key code 251) nor for the blue button (key code 254) the context menu is working in the two sections.

I believe this is a bug, is this then the right forum to post it?

Samba error when scanning

I recently having problem with updating my movies/series list. I'm getting a samba error on all my files, or at least the first of the files trying to be scanned, it takes years for the scanning since it gets a error every time it tries to open a folder.

For example:

And I have checked all permissions, and I can open the folder in Windows and play files within that folder.

I also tried to remove the video source, and had no problem with browsing to the series folder when adding it again, so the computer that have the files is accessible from Kodi.
Also tried to clean the database.

What more can I try?
