Fire TV exits to homescreen after screensaver/sleep

So I currently have 2 gen 1 fire tv sticks in my house. 1 of them will dump back to the homescreen after it goes into screensaver/sleep mode, the other will continue working with the app that it was on when it went to screensaver/sleep. The one that goes to the home screen will go back to the original app, but you cant control it, and within seconds the home screen comes back up. Is this expected behavior? Is there a menu setting somewhere to keep it on the app? Id like to stay in the app im in unless I specifically tell it to go to the homescreen, and I cant turn the dang screensaver off because I cant root it.
