IPTV for idiots?

Trying to get this set up. I found an m3u list of channels (really I just wanted a few though) that work through VLC. I use a local path and set the m3u playlist path. Now what? I don’t have/can’t seem to find a matching EPG path. Do I need an EPG to be able to my m3u playlists? If so, where do I get one that matches my m3u list? and if I make my own m3u list, do I need to create an epg file?
