Yes – this is a complaint, but more importantly a reasonably fair request.
REQUEST:
Upon the installer being ran, ask the user (if they ARE NOT NEW) what skin they want enabled:
- Name “Estuary” – indicate it is the NEW skin for Kodi, and is what will be officially supported going forward yada yada….
- List current skin (e.g., Leave Confluence alone), let the user choose to pick this option
Here is my point –
Kodi, upon install states *IT WILL NOT CHANGE YOUR USERDATA, NOTHING WILL BE OVERWRITTEN*
This is NOT true. If you have a customized GUI setup, even as simple as “Confluence” – it changes it, thus ….. YOUR USERDATA is changed.
God forbid you had something customized, you CANNOT go back to it, unless you manually backed up your entire content…..
If you **DID** backup your entire content, there is 0% chance you can just “copy it over” without being an advanced used and knowing what to copy or edit, and what not to.
From a development standpoint, the Kodi team owes it to its users to know this. “Reverting” to something custom is not simple. So why tell people it wont overwrite their customizations when it does exactly that?
Please update the installer to pick a path and be clear. It’s going to prevent many more concerns from the community as a whole. Kodi is an AMAZING piece of work. So much effort has been put into it over the last decade+ – please be thoughtful of the members who have supported it all of this time and be careful/thoughtful when releasing updates.
Rule of thumb:
If it has to change, go for it, but at least tell the existing member of such irreversible change. And conversely, if it aint broke, don’t fix it. If Kodi will work with the chosen settings the person has selected, leave it alone.
