Animated background gifs – RPI 3

I got a new RPI 3 and built it yesterday using Openelec and got everything going. This was to replace a RPI 2. On the RPI 2 box (using Openelec as well) – I wa sable to have animated cinegraphs as backgrounds for each menu under Aeon Nox skin. Now on the RPI 3 – the same exact .gif files only show the first frame and do not play or animate at all. Am I missing something – I’ve searched for hours and can’t figure this one out. Any help would be much appreciated!
