How to use Ibus to input non English text on Linux Mint

I’ve Kodi Krypton installed on Linux Mint. I’ve also the ibus package for switching keyboard input methods. Ibus works in every other application without issues. However, it does not work when inputting text in Kodi. Regardless of the input method, only English characters are shown in Kodi when typing.
