USB DAC vs Internal Soundcard vs SPDIF Combo

Hi all,

I would like input on a audiophile configuration for Kodi, presumably with some computer/electronic basis. I am not looking for “just hook it up in all combinations and see which you like best” response.

I have audiolinux (archlinux base) running Kodi for my music listening purposes (stereo). This computer has six audiophile DAC options and I’d like to know if it makes any difference which way it’s hooked up.

#: Kodi output mode > PCI device > Output
1: Kodi S/PDIF output > PCI USB card > USB > DAC (sony UDA-1) > Analog out
2: Kodi S/PDIF output > PCI Soundcard (M-Audio Delta410) > Analog out
3: Kodi S/PDIF output > PCI Soundcard (M-Audio Delta410) > S/PDIF out > DAC (Sony UDA-1) > Analog out
4: Kodi analog output > PCI USB card > USB > DAC (sony UDA-1) > Analog out
5: Kodi analog output > PCI Soundcard (M-Audio Delta410) > Analog out
6: Kodi analog output > PCI Soundcard (M-Audio Delta410) > S/PDIF out > DAC (Sony UDA-1) > Analog out

also….

I’m aware that the Sony DAC is 192kHz capable while the M-Audio card is only 96 – Most of my music is 16/44.1 (CD format). Let us NOT discuss the advantages or disadvantages of bitrate.

plus…

these audio linux distros push these PCI USB controllers aimed at sending an audiophile USB signal to the DAC. I didn’t shell out the 300$ for one of these, and instead bought a 25$ USB 3.0 controller. Dunno if that’s all snake oil or what, but it makes me wonder if the quality of sound or fidelity is affected by the signal path.

Anyways, let me know if you have input.

Thanks!

TL; DR – pick a number 1 – 6 for best signal path
