I have uncovered a little known issue with Android and Windows Server file shares. Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016 have a new feature called Data Deduplication. If you enable this feature on your server you will not be able to play any video from Kodi or VLC. There may be other apps effected but those are the two I tested with. The symptoms are that you can browse the file share and see all the media. It shows up in your library as normal, however if you try to play the media it will not play. No errors are shown in the GUI, it just never starts playing. I experienced this issue on an Nvidia Shield and well as a MINIX NEO U1.
This may be a good addition to the SMB troubleshooting section. [/b]
