Black screen

I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to upgrade from 16.1 to 17.1 on a Puersit box, and somehow through the process now 16.1 gives me only a black screen. The screen lasts about a minute, then returns to the home screen. All other independent apps on the box work fine. I notice in the apps settings Kodi has no defaults set. I’ve gone through the forced stop/clear cache process, the clear data process, and the hard reboot, all to no avail. I’m not sure I want to try a factory reset unless I have to. Please help me fix this.
