SOCK5 vs SOCK5 password

I can’t understand the difference between Proxy Settings “SOCKS5” and “SOCKS5 password” other than one appears to work with PIA and the other one doesn’t. Can someone please explain the difference between the two settings and why one works and other does not? Thank you in advance
