Audio SPDIF not working properly in Kodi, but works in WMP

I’ve been using Kodi for quite a while, but recently something is going wrong with the audio. I have a Bose system, connected to my Kodi Windows 10 computer via an optical SPDIF cable. This works just fine, giving me 5.0 or 5.1 sound depending on the source.

But, currently some video files are not working in Kodi, giving me 2.0 sound instead. If I play the same file via Windows Media Player, then the sound is proper 5.0 or 5.1, leading me to conclude that the issue is somewhere in Kodi or the settings. I’ve tried both WASAPI and DIRECTSOUND, both give no joy. Also, in the case that Kodi provides 2.0 sound it’s way lower volume.

I use

  • Kodi 17.3
  • Windows 10, updated but no creators update yet
  • M4A785TDM_EVO motherboard and the onboard audio
  • VT1708S 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC

The Bose set has always been working perfectly and indeed still does while playing via WMP, but when playing via Kodi, no luck. Is there a setting, config item or such that I can check? Google’ing has so far not really turned up anything. Only cases where it didn’t work at all, not where WMP does work and Kodi doesnt’.
