I tried upgrading Kodi to version 17 from the windows store and wound up with a major headache trying to connect to my remote server (using SMB protocol).
I downgraded back to version 16.1 and connection to media sources through SMB worked perfectly fine.
As a final test, I decided to try the same exercise using the local install of Kodi Version 17 Krypton beta 3 and creating new SMB media libraries worked like a charm.
So either the store version of Kodi is missing something to let it connect to remote computers, or I did something terribly wrong.
For an example of my process to add a media source:
-Chose to add a new video source
-Selected browse
-Selected Windows network (SMB)
-Selected the computer name where files are stored (this is where store version stopped)
-Selected the folder where files are stored
-Selected “Ok”
-Named my new library
