VLC is a media viewer, not a viewer/editor of arbitrary other files. In my experience, VLC for Android does not even view photos or GIFs. You may be able to view an XSPF file in a text editor. “Open the video file…on vlc” should work.
Perhaps detail the steps you took and specify your VLC version to assist the Developers.
