We believe that the problem on your older iPhone is due to scheduling on the slower CPU. It should be working better in the next update that we are currently working on.
We try hard to support older devices (download to iOS 9) with the latest versions of VLC-iOS so there shouldn’t be a need to install previous releases (which Apple makes very hard to do btw.).
