How do you know which shows have been watched?

I recently began transferring my movies and TV shows from AppleTV/iTunes to Kodi.
I started this when I discovered that the latest AppleTV device (at the time a gen 4, I think) didn’t identify which shows had already been watched — and I couldn’t remember from one week to the next where I left off in a series.
I would have thought that some type of notation when a show had been watched would be a no-brainer for a media manager, however I’m starting to wonder. 
I’m a really new Kodi user so I may have missed a setting somewhere, but I haven’t seen where Kodi provides this information either.
How do you guys keep track of what shows you have watched?
