I have VLC for Fire TV on my Amazon Fire TV Cube but have not used it for some months. It used to work (except see below), but I just tried it and it does not work now. Same message as you get. Yet Kodi on it works fine for home content. In my case, there have been no config changes and as Kodi works there is no problem with Windows sharing. So it appears Amazon has broken something.
I previously tried sideloading the standard VLC but could not get it to work. Not sure what the problem was now.
I will see if I can solve it not working in the next couple of days. Are you aware that the Fire TV downmixes multichannel home content to 2 channels? This is why I don’t use it anymore. I assume they configured it that way so we will be more likely to pay for their streaming content.
