As the title says.
I’ve been searching for this and this has been asked before I havent been able to find a definite answer. What I tried based on other threads isn’t getting me what I want. Sorry if this is a bit longwinded but I try to be very specific since the problem seems kinda detailed too.
My understanding is as follows:
There are different types of subtitles. The main ones are.
- a) The ‘regular’ subtitles where every spoken word in a movie is subtitled into whatever language the viewer needs.
- b) ‘SDH’ subtitles for the hearing impaired where additional stuff is put into the subtitles like ‘door creaks’, ‘music plays’ etc
- b) ‘Forced’ subtitles. Only subtiteling certain ‘foreign’ language parts. That crime movie which is almost entirely in English except for like 2 minutes where the main protagonist is in Mexico and they speak Spanish. Or those few bits in LOTR where they speak Elvish. etc. The ‘forced’ subtitles would only contain those bits.
My understanding is that by default ALL subtitles are ‘off’ in kodi. One can change that by going into a movie, then activate subs for it and then click on ‘set as default for all media’. Which subtitle will be chosen if multiple subtitles are present is you either pick one or an interplay of language settings.
The problem I have is with forced subtitles.
My understanding is that there is a way of not activating subtitles globally (any subtitle), but when there is a forced subtitle present it will be played automatically. Even when subtitles are off. Apparently an interplay of language settings will need to match for this to work.
This is how I want my kodi to behave but I havent been able to make this happen.
My Settings/Interface language is English. My Player/Language/Audio language is ‘Media default’ (also English in my example videos). My Player/Language/Subtitles language is ‘forced only’.
My videos (English) have the forced subtitle track (English, forced) and when I play the video and go into subtitles within the video it shows up as the one and only subtitle available. But it’s not coming on when I play the video. When I activate subtitles within the video it does come on. When I say set default for all media it doesnt give an error but it does not activate this setting for other media. It will remember the setting for this video however.
Driving me mad cos watching a tv series I have to remember switching forced subs on every new episode. Not the end of the world but should be possible, should be a common enough thing?
