Kodi Performance on Raspberry Pi Krystal vs Jarvis

I’ve had this nagging suspicion that Krypton is slower than Jarvis, so I decided to perform some tests on my Raspberry Pi. The two versions I tested were both from OpenElec: Jarvis 16,1 vs Krypton 17.3. Both systems are running the latest version of NextPVR.

First I ran a wifi speed test with no video playing and Kodi displaying the channel selection menu. Download speed was roughly the same at 24.4 Mbs. Upload speed was different: Jarvis 14.7 Mbs and Krypton was 18.5 Mbs. Note that TV these tests were run at the OS level and not in Kodi.

Next I ran a cold boot test. Krypton took 2:30 to boot and read the pvr data from the backend server. Jarvis took 1:00 to perform the same tasks. Krypton took 2.5 times longer than Jarvis to boot.

The reason I ran these tests is because the live TV viewing experience is so radically different. Jarvis handles TV antenna signal disruptions more quickly and more gracefully than Krypton. It’s really been frustrating experiencing long pauses while watching live TV using Krypton.

Does anyone know of anything that can be done on my end to get Krypton to perform as fast and as well as Jarvis?
