how to play movies from flash drive on H8 lite himedia box

How do I play movies in mkv format from my flash drive or external hard drive on my Himedia H8 lite Octacore set top box. When I plug it into the USB port my files don’t show up anywhere that I can find easily. Any thoughts. Thank you
