for me the very same problem:
1) KODI/Total Commander/Windows are able to use SMB 2/3, so can see files
2) no password is necessary (I disable it) but credentials can be used, if needed.
3) BUT, VLC is not able to see files and doesn’t ask for credentials nor show files
the “solution” was to enable SMB 1 on Windows machine – but, dear VLC, this is not a solution!
From log, it is similar to others:
-> Unable to open file with path (null) (in share (null))
Please fix it ASAP! this bug persists for a very long time.
