I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 last night and followed the instructions in the Auto Start guide:

My kodi user is called 'finn'.
When the PC boots up, only a black screen is shown on the TV connected via HDMI.
When I log in via ssh and run
sudo systemctl start kodi$ uname -a
