Stuttering 4k playback – Intel NUC Ubuntu

After going through some other problems with my new installation of Kodi on top of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on my Intel NUC 5PPYH I’m in the meanwhile almost happy with the setup. Although not a priority obviously I cannot seem to get 4K playback to work smoothly. I downloaded BBB_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal for testing purposes. I’m aware that 60fps playback will not be supported on this machine, but 30fps should be easily supported.

As soon as I start the movie I can see massive amount of skipped frames although the CPU utilization is very low (around 15% maybe). Needless to say this results in low fps, stuttering and an unwatchable experience.

I already played around with various combinations of HW acceleration setting (pure guessing trial and error) to no avail. Adjust display refresh rate is ON, sync playback to display is OFF, VDPAU is OFF, VAAPI is ON.

I hope this is a simple Ubuntu noob error and an easy fix. Here is the debug log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/23172301/

Thank you very much for your help!
