DIY: Compile and package Kodi 17 Krypton on Ubuntu?

I am not sure what is the actual share of users who deploy kodi on their own ubuntu server or desktop installs.
Since I didn’t intend to complain about the fact that Kodi 17 Krypton final has not yet been made available for my platform (I know it’s ready when it’s ready), I thought it was time for some DIY.

I feel like having read all of the how-to’s on compiling kodi in the internet but still needed some days of trial and error before finally arriving at having all the dependencies installed and successfully compiling kodi on my machine. Of course, I did that on my spare PC, not on my living room htpc to avoid hick-ups and keep the WAF up Wink

Now I am challenged to update kodi on my living room PC. Since I was not going to compile it once again on the 2nd machine, mainly – to be honest – because I couldn’t thoroughly remember all the steps that it required, I thought there must be a way to package it on the 1st machine and then install the package on the 2nd (hw is almost 100% identical).

Again after some reading I found the mk-debian-package.sh script buried in the kodi source folder, read the README.debian, installed debhelper and devscripts and thought I was ready to get kodi Krypton eventually packaged. Yet again, the process fails shortly before finish and I am stuck again. In the meanwhile I found out, that the script is referencing some outdated debian archive which obviously causes the packaging to fail.

Anyone knows what the magic sauce is or who can give me some guidance to successfully get the job done?

Please bear with me I’m a Linux beginner (but willing to learn)
