VLC media player for Windows Troubleshooting • Network Stream Cache/Lag (Direct vs Shared Shortcut)

Noticed an odd issue with streaming delay (lag/cache) when using shortcuts.

Current setup consists of a camera and media encoder connected to a local network PC for network streaming where zero delay (zero cache) is preferred. When using another in-network PC using VLC to connect to the stream by using the following, VLC connects to the stream with near zero lag (~0.2 sec) and works flawlessly….

Media -> Open Network Stream -> rstp://user:[email protected]/axis-media/media.amp?:network-caching=0?

The issue comes when creating a desktop shortcut to the stream to place on other clients desktops. Something with the cache command/handle/switch on the shortcut apparently isn’t recognized and the lag is always on the order of 3-4 seconds. On the shortcut that’s placed on the users desktops the following is listed in the ‘Target:’ field…

“C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe” “rstp://user:[email protected]/axis-media/media.amp?:network-caching=0?”

Again, every time the stream is connected to using the desktop shortcut, the lag is always 3-4 sec no matter the cache value used in the desktop shortcut ‘Target:’ field. When VLC is opened on the same PC and connecting to the same stream using “Media -> Open Network Stream -> rstp://user:[email protected]/axis-media/media.amp?:network-caching=0?”, the lag is zero and perfect.

Is there a bug when attempting to manually set cache using a shared desktop shortcut with additional commands in the ‘Target:’ value, or is there something we’re doing that’s improper use?

Thank you for any assistance!
