Impossible to update kodi

I am having a tremendous amount of trouble updating kodi to krypton. I can’t find any information on the web that isn’t simply telling me to download the latest version file kodi.tv… my device always gives me the cannot parse error message. I’ve never updated in this way actually. I can’t find any add source addresses either except for one but the link is no longer correct or something. I tried downloading on google play but i am not positive if i downloaded the right thing. Obviously i’m a newb at this stuff. Please guide me in the right direction, before i blow a gasket entirely. Thank you.
